POKOTABI / Itahachi
伊太八
Itahachi, a neighbourhood Chinese eatery in Kagurazaka's Shiroganecho, pairs its spicy signature ramen with small plates like pan-fried gyoza and steamed chicken late into the night.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked just off the busier streets of Kagurazaka in Shiroganecho, Itahachi is an unpretentious neighbourhood Chinese diner whose lights stay on late into the evening. With its counter seating and easygoing atmosphere, it provides a welcoming stop for anything from an after-work drink to a late-night bowl of noodles.
Once settled at the counter, it is tempting to begin with a cold draft beer or oolong high alongside small bites picked from the wall menu. Generously sized pan-fried gyoza arrive with a crisp sear, accompanied by straightforward dishes like pickled mustard greens with tofu or steamed chicken dressed with scallion sauce. Wing gyoza, crisp-skinned and packed with juicy filling, are another staple pairing with drinks.
Among the noodle dishes that anchor the menu, the signature Itahachi Ramen takes pride of place. Its broth marries rich miso depth with a pronounced kick of chilli, clinging nicely to medium-thin noodles and hitting the spot after a drink. Topped with tender, seasoned chashu pork and crisp spring onions, it offers a simple, dependable bowl you can return to regularly.
The kitchen also prepares soy-sauce ramen, Hong Kong-style dan dan noodles, and tsukemen, giving diners plenty of ways to tailor their order. Itahachi stays open until 2:00 late at night and operates on cash only, so make sure to carry yen before stepping in.
